November 28, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Moscow is unhappy with Belarusian interpretations of medieval history, which radically differ from those accepted in Russia and assert Belarusian identity based on “anti-Russian principles,\u201d according to a briefing note prepared this year by the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies (RISI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buro Media investigators obtained copies of RISI documents. One of them draws a distinction between the Belarusian nationalist and west Russian schools of history in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the 2020 political unrest, there was “a clash between the two versions of Belarusian history, with gradual acceptance of the nationalist version,” it says. In 2018\u20132020, the Belarusian Academy of Sciences published the five-volume “History of Belarusian Statehood,” which narrates history up to the XX century “in line with the canons of nationalist historiography.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, RISI notes Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s role in “purging the image of the past of external influences.” On his initiative, September 17 was declared National Unity Day in order to “consolidate in the minds of Belarusians a negative view of the periods when Belarusian lands were part of the Polish state.” \u0141uka\u0161enka adheres to a version of history “fundamentally different” from the nationalist interpretation, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It went on to say that Russia is “objectively interested in approving the historical interpretations that \u0141uka\u0161enka declares” but insists on supplementing them with Russian historical ideas based on the concepts of the “Russian world,” “country-civilization” and “one people,” stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is in Russia’s interests to form the historical consciousness of Belarusians as members of the same civilization as Russians, not as those living ‘between East and West,'” it stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Union State should work on merging the two countries’ historical policies, RISI says. It also considers it expedient to promote Belarusian studies in Russia in order to form a “Russian view” of Belarusian history. It suggests negotiating textbooks, museum exhibitions, the restoration of monuments and the production of historical TV shows and feature films for Belarusians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RISI is a think tank under Putin’s administration that advises federal agencies on security policy. It is headed by Mikhail Fradkov, a former Russian prime minister and head of the Foreign Intelligence Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
