November 29, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The social and legal status of Belarusian volunteers who fought in Ukraine is an issue for the European community, not only Belarusians, said Siarhiej \u0160a\u0142yhin, head of the Lithuanian-based club Li\u0107viny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0160a\u0142yhin spoke at a press conference in Vilnius, following the extradition of former Kastu\u015b Kalino\u016dski Regiment (KKR) fighter Vasil Vieramiej\u010dyk from Vietnam to Belarus earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian volunteer ended up in the Southeast Asian country after Ukraine banned his entry and Lithuania denied him asylum, declaring him as a “threat to national security.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A month before Vieramiej\u010dyk’s extradition from Vietnam to Belarus, he was denied entry to Poland, \u0160a\u0142yhin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Poland did not allow him to enter, and he returned to Vietnam.” “We talked about it for about an hour a day or two later. Of course, the man who had risked his life [for Ukraine] was furious. Ukraine, Lithuania and Poland did not stand up for him . . . We had maybe a couple of months left, because even his passport was about to expire and he was not needed anywhere in the world,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The activist said that the intelligence agencies of Belarus and Vietnam seized the opportunity to kidnap the veteran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked by Pozirk<\/em> what specific steps need to be taken internationally to protect Belarusians who fought for Ukraine, \u0160a\u0142yhin called for a broad public hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“People who were there, on the front line, should have the status of combat veterans,” he said. “We should not discriminate against volunteer fighters based on the color of their skin color or nationality. And Interpol should probably stop cooperating with the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
