December 1, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja and Europe’s outgoing top diplomat Josep Borrell have called on the European Union to maintain and strengthen its two-pronged policy on Belarus, isolating the regime but supporting the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In today’s opinion piece<\/a> for euobserver<\/em>, they said that “a democratic Belarus will be key to securing long-term peace and stability in eastern Europe.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The measures they suggested include supporting civil society and pro-democracy forces, allowing mobility for ordinary Belarusians and freeing political prisoners. They also called for stronger sanctions against the regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Most importantly, we must show the Belarusian people a clear vision of a European future. Belarusians must know that one day, when they are ready, the door of the EU will be open for their country to join as well,” they asserted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June, the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy thanked Cichano\u016dskaja for the work of pro-democracy forces at a meeting in Brussels. “Belarus was, is and will be on the EU agenda, and the future of Belarus is in Europe,” the opposition leader quoted Borrell as saying. “I couldn\u2019t agree more. Europe is where we belong and we just want to go home,” she commented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
