December 2, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Maryna Zo\u0142atava, jailed editor in chief of the outlawed Tut.by <\/em>news website, has been awarded the Johann Philipp Palm Award at yesterday’s ceremony in the German Schorndorf, Deutsche Welle<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Palm Foundation, a German non-profit, awards individuals or organizations for demonstrating “exceptional dedication to achieving freedom of speech and freedom of the press.”  This year, the prize of \u20ac20,000 is shared between Zo\u0142atava and the women-led team of the Afghan Zan Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities crushed Tut.by<\/em>, the country\u2019s largest independent news portal, in May 2021. About two years later, Zo\u0142atava and Tut.by CEO Ludmi\u0142a \u010cekina were given 12 years in prison each on charges widely seen as politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Committee for State Security also added both women to the list of people involved in \u201cterrorism,\u201d banning them from receiving money transfers in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A part of the Tut.by <\/em>team left Belarus to launch zerkalo.io<\/em>, a news website that largely follows in the footsteps of the original media outlet. Belarus and Russia have blocked access to it. On top of that, Belarus declared it extremist content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
