December 2, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Belarusian foreign ministry has expressed support for Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad in connection with attacks by “terrorist groups in the provinces of Aleppo and Hama.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that government troops have withdrawn from Aleppo. Syria’s second largest city has fallen under the control of the rebel forces. The surprise offensive by opposition forces, which began last week, marks the most significant fighting in Syria’s civil war in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In today’s statement, the Belarusian foreign ministry reaffirmed its support for Syria\u2019s independence and territorial integrity and \u201cthe efforts by Damascus and its allies to repel the terrorist threat and stabilize the situation.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also strongly condemned “terrorist attacks on consular offices and the civilian population” and expressed hope for quick stabilization, “the elimination of the terrorist threat and the return of brotherly Syria to peaceful life.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reports from Syria say that the rebel forces have captured significant supplies of military equipment, including helicopters, and are pressing on towards Hama, the next significant city on the road to Damascus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The al-Assad regime has never regained the power it had used to control Syria before 2011, the year of the Arab uprisings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even so, until the last few days, the regime controlled the major cities, their surrounding countryside and the main highways connecting them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now a coalition of rebel groups, led by\u00a0Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which has roots in al-Qaeda, has broken out of Idlib, the province along the border with Turkey that it controls, and in only a few days since November 27 swept away Syrian troops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
