December 5, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>New cases of politically-motivated persecution documented in Belarus on December 4 include two arrests in Mahilo\u016d allegedly linked to support of Ukrainian armed forces and exiled opposition groups branded extremist in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Financial police officers seized electronic devices, some $63,000 and a smaller sum of money in Belarusian rubels from the arrested, a pro-government source said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pro-government sources also reported an arrest over a tattoo with the Pahonia coat of arms and an anti-Russian slogan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge in Mahilo\u016d sentenced Danii\u0142 Harasim, 19, to 10 years in prison and fined him 24,000 rubels after finding him guilty of high treason and other crimes apparently linked to his support of Ukraine, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exiled Belsat<\/em> journalist Ale\u015b La\u016d\u010duk faces charges of insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka over a critical Facebook comment, Belsat <\/em>reported. Belarusian authorities blacklisted the station as an extremist group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Telegram channels monitoring politically-motivated persecution reported two trials on charges of violating the order of holding mass events which may be linked to regime critics\u2019 online activities: Mika\u0142aj U\u0142asievi\u010d was tried in Astraviec, Hrodna region, and librarian Alena Kasarevi\u010d, in Po\u0142ack, Viciebsk region. The sentences remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Online content<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information ministry reported extremist content designations for Byt Ili<\/em> and OSINT Bdzholi+<\/em> Telegram channels, Aleksey Chemodanov’s social media page, and I Snova Dobriy Vecher<\/em> group on Odnoklassniki.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blogger Vadzim Jerma\u0161uk aka Vadimati left Belarus after authorities blacklisted his Instagram page that he had deleted earlier, Julija Sli\u016dko said on Instagram. In June, he was released after serving a three-year prison term in a politically-motivated case linked to his online activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of December 5, human rights defenders identified at least 1,289 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities filed 7,400 politically-motivated criminal cases in the four years since the August 2020 presidential election, Viasna reported in mid-October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
