December 6, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Integration between Belarus and Russia will require a common currency at some point, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk has told Izvestia<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official noted that economic expediency would force Minsk to propose the move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His statement comes ahead of a high-level Union State event in Minsk today, which may see Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and Russian President Vladimir Putin sign a security guarantees agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A single currency has already been discussed but for now it remains “not that relevant,” Overchuk said, noting that its introduction requires certain conditions and substantiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus and Russia use their national currencies for 98 percent of mutual payments, he said. Moscow and Minsk do not aspire for 100 percent as \u201cit happens naturally, business itself decides what is convenient for it,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2023, D\u017amitryj Krutoj, the Belarusian ambassador to Russia at the time, denied plans for a single currency, claiming that \u0141uka\u0161enka and Putin had agreed not to discuss the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, \u0141uka\u0161enka told the Russian central bank governor that launching a single currency would be difficult and probably could not be done at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three years ago, Putin complained about insufficient integration within the Union State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
