December 10, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The price of opposing Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s regime is shockingly high but this burden cannot rest solely on the shoulders of the Belarusian people, said \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, the Belarusian opposition leader, and Jemimah Steinfeld, CEO of Index on Censorship, in a joint article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It called on the international community to amplify the voices of Belarusians, remember the victims and ensure the continuation of the struggle for freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus closes 2024 and enters the new year with bleak prospects, it continued. It pointed out that \u0141uka\u0161enka is again threatening to shut down the internet during the elections. Any form of protest is being brutally repressed. The crackdown has not stopped, it is intensifying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the bleak picture, Cichano\u016dskaja and Steinfeld say there is reason for hope. The Belarusian independent media, forced into exile, continue their work and are “the strongest antidote to the pro-\u0141uka\u0161enka and Russian propaganda,” they stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The article calls on the international community to speak out in defense of the imprisoned journalists and all political prisoners in Belarus, send them letters of solidarity and attract attention to the brutal repression in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We cannot normalise terror or allow dictators to feel unpunished,” the authors stressed. “Today, the world desperately needs fewer dictators.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tens of thousands of people have been arrested, tortured or forced into exile since 2020. At least 35 media workers are in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
