December 11, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>The European Commission has supported the potential suspension of the right to asylum by the European Union member states \u201cto prevent Russia and Belarus from using European principles and values\u201d against the EU, its website said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move should help \u201dcounter hybrid threats from the weaponization\u201d of illegal migration by Russia and Belarus and strengthen security at the EU’s external borders, according to the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Commission cited a 66-percent annual increase in illegal border crossings into Poland via Belarus this year, noting that in most of the cases, illegal migrants possessed Russian student or tourist visas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Russia and Belarus take advantage of people, using human beings in an act of hostility, disregarding their vulnerability,” it said, noting that Minsk and Moscow “use this hybrid warfare as a political tool to destabilize” the EU and integrity of the Schengen area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Commission has also allocated an additional \u20ac170 million to strengthen border controls at the shared border with Belarus and Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian western neighbors will receive almost half of these funds with \u20ac52 million earmarked for Poland; \u20ac17 million, for Latvia; \u20ac15.4 million, for Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The funds will be used to upgrade to electronic surveillance equipment, improve telecommunication networks, deploy mobile detection equipment and counter drone incursions, the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-European border has been ongoing since the spring of 2021. Poland and the Baltic states call it a hybrid attack organized by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In mid-October, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced a new migration strategy, designed to deter illegal migration by third-country nationals via Belarus. Among other things, it provides for a potential \u201cterritorial\u201d suspension of asylum procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
