December 12, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Authorities’ harassment of regime critics over their online activities led to a tragedy in the Brest region, where \u015aviat\u0142ana Krucikava took her own life two days ago following continued searches, arrests and trials for sharing opposition content, Dissidentby said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other documented instances of politically-motivated persecution included the arrest of a 20-year-old for a police joke on TikTok. The arrested used to work for the interior ministry, a pro-government source claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge in \u010ca\u0161niki, Viciebsk region, tried Kanstancin \u010carno\u016d for sharing opposition content, the Vitebsk, Ya Gulayu<\/em> Telegram channel said. The man had already been tried on similar charges in the past, while the authorities branded his social media pages as extremist content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vasil Ruba\u0144ko\u016d, Alaksandar Valencijonak and Natalla \u017ddanovi\u010d were tried in the Viciebsk region, yet the charges against them remain unknown, the same channel reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information ministry reported extremist content designations for bchd.info<\/em>, the official website of the outlawed Belarusian Christian Democratic party, the Instagram page of the new Belsat <\/em>TV editor-in-chief Alina Ko\u016d\u0161yk, Facebook account of the Volny Chor (Free Choir), Podslushano Pinsk<\/em> VKontakte group with 24,000 followers; to_uzajemna<\/em> and zmahary.krakowa<\/em> on Instagram; fundacia_tutaka<\/em> and bambalejlaaa <\/em>on TikTok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judge U\u0142adzimir Radziuk from I\u016dje, Hrodna region, is considering a motion to send exiled Rehina \u0141avor, founder of a local ethnic museum, to a correctional facility, according to the electronic court schedule. The woman fled Belarus after authorities had sentenced her to two years of restricted freedom in home confinement over online comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u017amitryj Andrasiuk, Alaksandar Trojni\u010d, Illa Karaty\u0161e\u016dski, Viktoryja Vasile\u016dskaja and U\u0142adzimir Noha\u010d went on trial in Brest in connection with their alleged roles in 2020 postelection protests, the Brest branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. Three years ago, Andarasiuk served three months in jail for refusing to testify in a politically-motivated case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge in Minsk sentenced Hanna Stry\u017eevi\u010d to four years in prison on charges of violent disorder, insulting and defaming Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and facilitating extremism for alleged association with opposition groups, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imprisoned journalist Ihar Karniej was tried in \u0160k\u0142o\u016d, Mahilo\u016d region, on charges of disobeying prison authorities, the electronic court schedule said. Earlier this year, Karniej was given three years in prison on extremism-related charges linked to his professional activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of December 12, human rights defenders identified at least 1,283 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
