December 13, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The \u0160k\u0142o\u016d District Court in the Mahi\u0142o\u016d region has sentenced imprisoned journalist Ihar Karniej, 56, to eight additional months in prison for disobeying prison authorities, the RFE\/RL<\/em> Belarus Service reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities routinely use this charge to keep political prisoners behind bars longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar Tarakana\u016d, a judge on the European Union\u2019s sanctions list, presided over the proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karniej, a former RFE\/RL <\/em>Belarus Service correspondent, has been in custody since July 2023. In March, he was given three years in prison on charges of association with an extremist group. A few months later, authorities also blacklisted him as an extremist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The administration of \u0160k\u0142o\u016d\u2019s Penal Colony No 17 has reportedly placed the journalist in internal prison several times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karniej had a long history of cooperating with independent media. Human rights groups consider him a political prisoner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
