December 13, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Representatives of the media sector in Belarus and abroad are facing pressure and reprisals by the Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka regime, said Aleh Ahieje\u016d, deputy chairman of the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The BAJ website lists 37 jailed journalists but the real number of repressed reporters is higher, Ahieje\u016d told a forum of Baltic media organizations and exiled Belarusian journalists in Vilnius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, reporters and their relatives don’t announce searches, arrests or prison sentences, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They have been warned against disclosing these facts, threatened with problems if this information gets out. And everyone knows what is meant by problems: the statistics on torture of detainees are horrific. So we cannot publish what we know. But I admit that we may not know everything,” Ahieje\u016d said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Mass repression” may no longer be an adequate term for the Belarusian situation, the activist argued. “The situation meets the criteria of terror against one’s own population, because the ratio of daily detentions, sentences and people enduring politically motivated persecution to the total number of citizens is terrible.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are trying to do everything to protect our colleagues or at least minimize the consequences of reprisals against them,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
