December 15, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The European Union (EU) stopped at least 475 illegal entries from Belarus in the first 13 days of December, according to Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of data from border agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This represents an increase of 64.4 percent from the same period last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland reported 414 incidents, Latvia reported 43 and Lithuania 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As compared with the first 13 days of November, illegal migration dropped considerably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the beginning of the year, border guards foiled 36,010 attempts to sneak into the EU, including 29,718 into Poland, 5,317 into Latvia and 975 into Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On December 10, Poland extended a buffer zone along the Belarusian border for 90 days. Justifying the extension, the Polish interior ministry said attempts decreased by 41 percent thanks to the measure. A total of 11,200 attempts were documented between June 13, when it was first imposed, and December 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ministry said that protecting the border with Belarus was one of its key priorities in 2024. In addition to the border area entry ban, police and army contributed to the decrease. The barrier along the land border was upgraded and surveillance equipment was installed on water sections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
