December 16, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated persecution documented in Belarus on December 14 and 15 include an extremist group designation for the Volnyja Kupa\u0142a\u016dcy exiled theater company. The interior ministry listed actors Zoja Bie\u0142achvo\u015bcik, Aleh Harbuz, Valancina Harcujeva, Siarhiej \u010cub, Kry\u015btina Droby\u0161, Michai\u0142 Zuj and stage director Alaksandar Harcuje\u016d as members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Homiel Regional Court upheld an additional one-year prison sentence for opposition activist Palina \u0160arenda-Panasiuk, the Brest branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. This is her third additional term for alleged disobedience to prison authorities, a charge often used in Belarus to prolong the regime critics\u2019 terms behind bars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jailed anarchist activist Akichira Haje\u016dski-Chanada, serving a lengthy prison term on charges widely seen as politically motivated, was transferred to internal prison, a Telegram channel linked to the anarchist movement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u017dana Valevi\u010d was tried in Lepiel, Viciebsk region, for sharing opposition content and violating the order of holding mass events, the Vitebsk, Ya Gulayu<\/em> Telegram channel reported. The sentence remains unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prosecutors forwarded to court a case against a 36-year-old man, Minsk-Novosti<\/em> said. He allegedly insulted Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka in front of his supporters, who collected ballot-access signatures for the Belarusian ruler in Minsk. The man was allegedly drunk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities seized a bicycle from exiled human rights defender Leanid Sudalenka to cover the fine of 26,000 rubels ($7,480), he said on Facebook. Earlier this year, he was also given five years in prison without being present at a trial on charges of facilitating extremism in connection with his work for Viasna, designated as an extremist group by Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opposition activist Antanina Kanava\u0142ava was released from prison, her exiled mother said on Facebook. The woman, who was serving a five-and-a-half-year prison term in a politically-motivated case, could have been pardoned. Her husband remains behind bars after being convicted in the same case. Four years ago, Kanava\u0142ava volunteered for \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s presidential campaign and was later branded as an extremist and a terrorist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of December 16, human rights defenders identified at least 1,281 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
