December 16, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>The Belarusian foreign ministry has suspended the operation of the embassy in Syria and recalled diplomats to Minsk, citing tumultuous developments in the country, its unofficial Telegram channel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian nationals will have access to consular services at a \u201ctemporary consular post\u201d in Lebanon’s Beirut, it noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ambassador Juryj S\u0142uka will stay in Minsk \u201cfor consultations which should result in an in-depth assessment of the situation,\u201d the message said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The foreign ministry expressed gratitude to Russian diplomats who helped evacuate their Belarusian colleagues from Damascus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One week ago, after the fall of Bashir al-Assad’s regime, the Syrian foreign ministry said that all Syrian diplomatic missions, including the one in Belarus, will continue their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assad fled to Moscow which granted him and his family asylum. Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka supported him throughout the Syrian civil war, which has been ongoing since 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
