December 16, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarus deserves \u201ca place at the negotiating table\u201d during possible future peace talks on Ukraine, Deputy Foreign Minister Juryj Ambrazievi\u010d has told the state-run advisory council for Belarusians abroad, citing Minsk\u2019s peacemaking efforts and the need to ensure security guarantees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stressing \u201cgrowing global demand for a diplomatic solution to the conflict,\u201d the diplomat said Belarus was interested in a peaceful resolution more than anyone else, as \u201cno country wants armed hostilities to break out near its borders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ambrazievi\u010d dismissed accusations of Minsk\u2019s complicity in the war as \u201cabsurd,\u201d according to the state-run media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His statement comes weeks after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka denied giving permission to Russia to attack Ukraine from Belarus in 2022. The Belarusian ruler claimed that Kyiv had provoked Moscow while it was withdrawing its troops from Belarus after a drill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February 2022, Russia started a full-scale war against Ukraine. Authorities in Minsk kept claiming peaceful intentions and denied the Belarusian army\u2019s involvement in combat operations and but allowed Russian troops to attack Ukraine from Belarus on multiple occasions and supplied arms to the Kremlin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 20,000-strong grouping of Russian forces crossed into Ukraine from Belarus at the outset of the war, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka told journalists in July 2022, while Ukraine estimated their number at some 70,000 troops and 7,000 armored vehicles. Later, the Russian army was forced to retreat from northern Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
