{"id":118804,"date":"2024-12-18T13:13:08","date_gmt":"2024-12-18T10:13:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/118804\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"linguists-politicians-agree-that-russian-should-be-dropped-as-official-language-after-lukasenka","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/118804\/","title":{"rendered":"Linguists, politicians agree that Russian should be dropped as official language after \u0141uka\u0161enka"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>December 18, <em>Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarus should have only Belarusian as official language after the democratic reforms and a certain transition period, language experts concluded yesterday at a conference organized by the opposition transition cabinet in Warsaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the official language status is a &#8220;very sensitive&#8221; issue, democratic transformation should nevertheless take into account the preservation of Belarusian, the experts agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The introduction of Russian along with Belarusian as an official language after the controversial 1995 referendum led to discrimination and the eradication of Belarusian from public use, said Pavie\u0142 Barko\u016dski, transition cabinet&#8217;s acting representative in charge of national renaissance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Independent sociologists Maryna Hulajeva and Andrej Vardamacki confirmed this trend, noting that Belarusians currently do not consider their mother tongue as the nation\u2019s distinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belarusian society has gone through deliberate and massive Russification, stressed Anatol Labied\u017aka, constitutional reform advisor to opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may take time to reverse these trends, educate society and convince people that Belarus needs only one official language, he added, explaining the need for a transition period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of school students receiving instruction in Belarusian shrinks every year, while speaking Belarusian is often considered by officials a sign of dissent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also read: <a href=\"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/104953\/\">Belarusians name common mentality as factor uniting nation more often \u2013 poll<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>December 18, Pozirk.
