December 19, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>The UK Embassy in Minsk has called for the release of all arbitrarily detained journalists in Belarus in a joint statement signed by diplomats from Germany, the Netherlands and Czechia, members of the Media Freedom Coalition advocating media freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are shocked by the arrests of seven journalists this month, another tragic example of the suppression of free speech in Belarus,” British diplomats said on Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement may refer to the arrest of journalist Rus\u0142an Raviaka and six other former employees of the outlawed Intex-Press<\/em> local news outlet in Baranavi\u010dy, Brest region, last week. Authorities accuse them all of facilitating extremism for alleged association with independent media outlets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, 45 media workers are held behind bars in Belarus, according to the Belarusian Association of Journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the 2020 political crisis, authorities in Belarus have been equating criticism, solidarity, advocacy, free media and free expression to extremism and terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
