December 21, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>An inquiry into the actions of German right-wing politician J\u00f6rg Dornau, who allegedly used forced labor at his onion farm in Belarus\u2019 Hrodna region, did not establish crimes that could be prosecuted in Germany, Leipzig prosecutors said yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Current legislation provides for the application of the universal legal principles only on human trafficking charges, which is not the case, they noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forced labor crimes can only be prosecuted in Germany if the perpetrator is German at the time of the offense and the offense is punishable at the place where it was committed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are no indications of forced labor in Belarus and therefore Dornau cannot be prosecuted in Germany, the prosecutors concluded. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The prisoner was not obliged to accept the offer of work from the farm. However, he had preferred the work on the onion farm to the conditions in the prison. The work had not been forced, but the conditions in the prison had been torture,” they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two months ago, reform.news<\/em> ran an article about Dornau\u2019s deal with a detention center in the Hrodna region to employ political prisoners at his Belarusian company\u2019s onion plantation. The inmates were reportedly paid about \u20ac5 a day and the German politician personally checked their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
