December 22, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Lithuanian border guards did not allow at least 24 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus two days ago, according to Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border guards’ data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A comparable number of attempts, 29, was recorded about two months ago. In November and December, the number of illegal crossings from Belarus into Lithuania ranged from one to 18, with no attempts reported on 33 days out of 56.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania has thwarted 42 illegal crossings since the start of this month and 999, since January; Latvia, 43 and 5,317, respectively; while Poland remained the main target of illegal migration, accounting for 519 and 29,823 attempts, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, the Polish government approved laws to secure the border and prevent Minsk from using illegal migration against Poland, including a temporary restriction of asylum rights as proposed earlier by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
