December 25, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Ukrainian government has proposed to exclude Belarusian and Russian from the national list of languages supported and protected under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s according to a Telegram post by Taras Melnychuk, who represents the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers in the Verkhovna Rada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The charter was adopted in Strasbourg on November 5, 1992, by Council of Europe (CoE) member states but is open for signature by European countries outside CoE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The document highlights the promotion of mutual understanding between all linguistic groups of a country, respect for the geographical area of regional or minority languages, the need for resolute action to promote these languages, and other principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apparently, the prospective exclusion of Russian and Belarusian from the Ukrainian list of protected languages is linked to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and Belarus’ support for the invasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
