December 28, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Human rights defenders have designated 12 people targeted in extremism cases as political prisoners, bringing the total to 1,265, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new political prisoners are \u010ces\u0142a\u016d Hierasimovi\u010d and U\u0142adzimir Sitkovi\u010d, sentenced to five years in prison, Artur Miemiech, sentenced to three years, and Alena Mocharava, sentenced to an unknown term, as well as Ihar Sidarovi\u010d, Alaksandar Kuksa, Alaksandar Mazur, Michai\u0142 Halinski, journalist Siarhiej \u010cabo\u0107ka, Pavie\u0142 Karaniuchin, Jana Caruk and Maryja Bataljonak awaiting trials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The activists demanded freedom for these and all other political prisoners and an end to reprisals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement was signed by Viasna, the Office for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Pravavaja Inicyjatyva, and Lawtrend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier today, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka pardoned 20 of his opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of designated political prisoners is significantly lower than the total estimate of repression victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials deny the existence of political prisoners in Belarus, arguing that its Criminal Code does not contain any “political” articles. At the same time, they use extremism, incitement, disorder and similar charges for reprisals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
