December 30, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Poland has thwarted 617 illegal border crossings via Belarus since the start of December, 60 percent more than in December 2023, and 29,921 crossings since the start of 2024, according to Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border guards’ data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

December 27 was the second day after February 5 when foreigners did not make any attempts to cross the Belarusian-Polish border illegally. Lithuania has not recorded illegal crossings since December 22 and Latvia, since December 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the outgoing month, Lithuania stopped 45 illegal migrants from entering the European Union from Belarus and Latvia, 43.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, the EU stopped at least 36,240 illegal border crossings at its shared border with Belarus, including 5,317 attempts via Latvia and 1,002 via Lithuania. Illegal migration fell about 13.6 percent year on year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this month, the Polish government approved laws to secure the border and prevent Minsk from using illegal migration against Poland, including a temporary restriction of asylum rights as proposed earlier by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
