December 31, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Belarusian Finance Ministry said it paid a rubel equivalent of $22.8 million in interest on the US-dollar-denominated Eurobonds maturing in 2027 by two transfers to a separate account at Belarusbank on December 27 and 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The payments were made after the replacement of Eurobonds maturing on June 29, 2027 with government bonds through the Russian National Settlement Depository for 1,760 bondholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In late June 2022, the Council of Ministers and the National Bank declared their intention to service Belarus\u2019 foreign debt in Belarusian rubels. Belarus has been depositing rubel interest payments at Belarusbank after Citigroup and Citibank stopped servicing payments on its Eurobonds amid Western sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rating agencies Fitch and Moody\u2019s downgraded Belarus\u2019 credit rating: the former said its default was inevitable, and the latter described the rubel payment as a default.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian Ministry of Finance criticized those decisions and keeps paying Eurobond interest in rubels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
