December 31, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Five candidates, who are running for president in January, did not spend anything for their electoral campaigns from December 11 to 27, according to Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of the central election commission’s (CEC) data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus’ longtime ruler Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and his supporter Aleh Hajdukievi\u010d of the pro-government Liberal Democratic Party increased their electoral funds to 626,760 ($180,440) and 8,805 rubels ($2,535), respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other candidates\u2019 electoral funds did not grow in the second half of December. Siarhiej Syranko\u016d, of the pro-government Communist Party of Belarus reported having 34,370 rubels for his campaign; Alaksandar Chi\u017eniak, leader of the pro-government Republican Party of Labor and Justice, 24,760 rubels; former MP Hanna Kanapackaja, 19,210 rubels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, Kanapackaja spent more than 98 percent of her electoral campaign funding, while Chi\u017eniak did not spend anything. \u0141uka\u0161enka’s expenses stood at 15 percent; Hajdukievi\u010d’s, at 1.6 percent and Syranko\u016d’s, at 58 percent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka, in power in Belarus since 1994, collected 2,518,145 ballot-access signatures for his nomination, the central election commission claimed one week ago, noting that the four remaining presidential hopefuls barely reached the 100,000 threshold that allows qualifying for the race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus will hold its seventh presidential election from January 21 to 26, with the whole election cycle limited to just three months. The current campaign is taking place in a purged political landscape amid a new wave of crackdown on regime critics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian opposition dismissed the election as a sham, noting that political reprisals prevent pro-democracy candidates from running and voters from freely expressing their will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The country has not held a single free and fair election since 1996 by the standards of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
