January 2, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The European Union (EU) countries neighboring Belarus registered 36,291 illegal attempts to cross from there in 2024, 13.8 percent less than in 2023, Pozirk<\/em> calculated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland reported 29,972 attempts (up 17.2 percent); Latvia, 5,317 attempts (down 61.7 percent); and Lithuania, 1,002 attempts (down 62.1 percent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The busiest month overall was May, when a total of 7,694 incidents were reported (Poland, 7,117; Latvia, 543; Lithuania, 34). In 2023, this was October with 5,474 incidents (Poland, 2,221; Latvia, 2,866; Lithuania, 387).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The illegal migration at the Polish border peaked in May with 7,117 cases, at the Latvian border in July with 1,043 cases and at the Lithuanian border in October with 219 cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Poland, the daily record for prevented border crossings from Belarus was set on April 10 (457). The Latvians registered it on October 15 (82) and the Lithuanians on July 20 (40).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The refugee crisis at the border between Belarus and the EU has been going on since the spring of 2021. According to the EU, it has been orchestrated by Moscow and Minsk to undermine its democracies. Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka says that his border guards will not stop third-country migrants on their way to Europe, accusing the West of unwillingness to cooperate and sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
