January 5, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>Reprisals and state-sponsored terror keep defining the Belarusian regime’s internal policies, the Viasna Human Rights Center said in its recent report on human rights situation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reprisals target “everyone who can be suspected of disloyalty to the authorities” with at least 759 instances of politically-motivated persecution documented last month alone, it noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past few months, authorities have targeted the LGBTQ+ community, stepping up harassment of regime critics and political prisoners\u2019 families in the run-up to the January presidential election, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian judges passed about 150 politically-motivated sentences while ignoring allegations of torture and ill-treatment of defendants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities filed 7,759 politically-motivated criminal cases in the four years since the August 2020 presidential election, according to Viasna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In December, rights groups documented 58 new political prisoners, while 49 were released. At least 190 people jailed for political reasonshave serious health issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of January 5, human rights defenders identified at least 1,263 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
