January 9, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Propagandist Raman Pratasievi\u010d<\/em> has released photos from the former presidential candidate, political prisoner Viktar Babaryka’s place of captivity and his video address to his relatives. In the video, the politician is probably talking to his daughter and granddaughter, who are abroad. He is saying that he loves them. Babaryka had been held incommunicado for more than a year and a half. It is unknown under what circumstances and on what conditions his meeting with Pratasievi\u010d took place. The politician was sentenced to 14 years behind bars. He is serving his sentence at Navapo\u0142ack’s Penal Colony No. 1 in the Viciebsk region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the Hrodna region’s Voranava District Court considered the cases of Alaksandra Stara\u015bcienka, Anastasija Mi\u0161ota and Maryja Ilukovi\u010d, charged with sharing banned content, a minor offense. The verdicts are unknown, Pravo Imeyut<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u017amitryj Ma\u0107vijenka, Alaksiej Kulbako\u016d and Arciom Danhizian went on trial at a district court in Brest to answer charges of violent disorder. Presumably, this is the next group of Brest residents persecuted in connection with the August 10, 2020 protest, Viasna Brest<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, authorities designated Trukha, a Ukrainian media project, as extremist content across all online platforms, the Ministry of Information<\/em> reported. The project’s main Telegram channel has 2.6 million subscribers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On January 6, at a Homiel police department, officers held a “preventive conversation” with people on the watchlist, including those persecuted for political reasons in the past, to warn them against election activism, according to Viasna Homiel<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hrodna’s blogger Vadzim Jerma\u0161uk (Vadimati), who spent three years behind bars, reported that police compromised him with a revenge porn video, lowering his “social status” among prisoners. After his release, authorities labeled his Instagram page as extremist and he has fled Belarus, Mostmedia.io<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus has designated 257 groups as “extremist formations,” including 89 last year, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. In 2024, the authorities added 10 media outlets, coalitions that ran for the opposition Coordination Council, the Volnyja Kupa\u0142a\u016dcy theater company, nonprofits, initiatives and foreign foundations to the blacklist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of January 9, human rights defenders identified at least 1,258 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
