January 9, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The European Union (EU) did not allow at least 76 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus in the first week of January with all attempts targeting Poland, just as was the case one year ago, according to Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border guards’ data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of illegal crossings tripled year on year yet is significantly lower compared to early January 2023 when 626 attempts were reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia\u2019s most recent reports of illegal migrants trying to cross into the EU via Belarus date back to December 9 and Lithuania\u2019s, to December 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the EU thwarted at least 36,291 illegal border crossings on its shared border with Belarus after foiling 42,078 attempts in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border has been ongoing since spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last month, the Polish government approved laws to secure the border and prevent Minsk from using illegal migration against Poland, including a temporary restriction of asylum rights as proposed earlier by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
