January 12, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong><\/em> Danuta Pieradnia, a 22-year-old student given six and a half years in prison for an antiwar post in 2022, was released under the recent pardon program, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reports, citing Dissidentby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peradnia was arrested in late February 2022, a few days after the start of Russia’s war on Ukraine, in which Minsk supported the Kremlin. Authorities persecuted the student for criticizing Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the Telegram messaging app, blacklisting her as an \u201cextremist\u201d and a \u201cterrorist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pieradnia was part of the eighth group of political prisoners granted clemency in the second half of 2024. Last July, \u0141uka\u0161enka announced the release of his critically ill opponents, after which 18 political prisoners were released. Later he issued more pardons, bringing the number of the forgiven to 227.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, authorities continue to arrest people for political reasons and courts often issue sentences in politically-motivated trials, with reprisals intensifying in the run-up to the presidential election on January 21-16, rights groups note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of January 12, human rights defenders identified at least 1,254 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
