August 29, BPN.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusian human rights groups have declared 17 people political prisoners, bringing the total number to 1,496.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Law enforcers have arrested them for alleged crimes such as insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and his officials, inciting hatred against Russians and desecrating state symbols, the statement says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The groups, including the Viasna Human Rights Center and the Barys Zvozska\u016d Human Rights House, said it was unacceptable to imprison people for insulting state institutions and symbols, and demanded an end to the clampdown on “lawful forms of expression.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The human rights defenders also called for the release of these and other victims of repression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Political cases often go unreported, and opposition sources estimate the actual number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
