January 14, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The center-right European People’s Party<\/a> has dismissed the upcoming presidential election in Belarus as a farce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Opposition candidates are barred from participating, media freedom is heavily restricted, voters face intimidation, the independent election observation is absent,” Europe’s heavyweight political alliance stated in an emergency resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It said that Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s regime had expanded its repression against civil society, journalists and political activists. The repressive measures also include “unprecedented attacks” on freedom of religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The regime’s actions include censorship, forced exile, deprivation of property, and economic coercion. Peaceful protests are currently impossible, as individuals face persecution even for expressing dissenting opinions online or in public forums,” the resolution reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EPP calls for bringing \u0141uka\u0161enka and his “illegitimate” regime to justice for violence against the people. Minsk must also be held accountable for actively supporting Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja urged EPP members to include Ukraine and Belarus in their electoral programs for the European Parliament elections. She emphasized that supporting democratic change in Belarus would aid Ukraine and weaken Vladimir Putin’s influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
