January 15, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The state-run media broadcast a trailer showing jailed former RFE\/RL<\/em> journalist Andrej Ku\u017anie\u010dyk yesterday evening, announcing broadcasts featuring his imprisoned former colleagues Ihar \u0141osik and Ihar Karniej as well as Juryj Ziankovi\u010d, Belarusian-US lawyer serving a sentence for alleged conspiracy to assassinate Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka. \u0141osik was held incommunicado for 695 days before the trailer’s release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases of politically-motivated persecution documented in Belarus on January 14 included extremist content designations for dozens of social media pages, including pozirk_online<\/em> on TikTok; Svyashchenniy Belavud<\/em> and BIE\u0141ARUSKI \u010cAT <\/em>on Telegram, five X pages, 11 Instagram pages and the gronka.org <\/em>crowdfunding platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information ministry also blacklisted historian Zachar \u0160ybieka’s Narys Bielaruskaj Historyi (1975-2002) (Belarusian history from 1795 to 2002) as well as Tayny Belorusskoi Istorii (Belarusian History Secrets), a popular history book by Vadzim Dzieru\u017eynski.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Piotr Iovin was tried four days ago in Kalinkavi\u010dy, Homiel region, on charges of sharing opposition content, the Homiel branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. The sentence remains unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge in Navapo\u0142ack, Viciebsk region, tried D\u017amitryj Ano\u0161ka for allegedly violating the order of holding mass events, Viasna’s Viciebsk branch said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Veterinarian Arciom Kucharonak was found guilty of five crimes, including association with an extremist group, inciting hatred and calling for sanctions, Na\u0161a Niva <\/em>reported. The sentence is unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Catholic priest Hienryk Aka\u0142atovi\u010d recently given 11 years in prison on high treason charges may submit a pardon request, katolik.life <\/em>reported. However, he pleaded not guilty and intends to appeal the verdict. Rights groups consider him a political prisoner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of January 15, human rights defenders identified at least 1,249 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
