January 15, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Viktar \u0141uka\u0161enka, a son of Belarus’ longtime ruler Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, has been re-elected president of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) for another four-year term, its press office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eighty-two NOC members voted for him, two voted against and three abstained. It remains unknown if there were any other candidates. D\u017amitryj Da\u016dhalonak was elected NOC deputy head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viktar \u0141uka\u0161enka has headed the NOC since February 2021, after replacing his father, who was in charge of the agency since 1997 and was forced to resign under pressure from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in connection with the politically-motivated persecution of athletes in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IOC did not recognize \u0141uka\u0161enka’s son as legitimate head of the NOC. He is also under sanctions imposed by the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and other democratic countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
