January 16, Pozirk. <\/strong>Former KGB Deputy ChairmanIhar Sierhiejenka, currently chairman of the House of Representatives, and other officials have held dozens of meetings with voters across the country in the last few days to shore up support for Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka in the run-up to January 21-26 presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a meeting with power utility workers in his hometown of \u0160arka\u016d\u0161\u010dyna in northern Belarus, Sierhiejenka argued that the number of cars has increased in the country during \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s rule from 500,000 in the 1990s to more than 3,000,000 now, according to a report by the lower house\u2019s press office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The quality of life is improving. Economic development is driving the social sphere,” the official told the audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I am saying all this so that we understand what has been created during this time, what we must preserve and in no case lose,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The press office said that the presidential election was an important topic of his speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Sierhiejenka, the West is trying to destroy the economy of Belarus through economic sanctions and fake news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It takes years to achieve a certain standard of living, a level of prosperity, but it can be lost and ruined instantly. We see what is happening in neighboring states,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He called on workers to appreciate what was “conquered by our ancestors” and vote for a “stable, confident present and future.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lawmakers held at least 44 meetings with voters on January 16 and more than 70 in the previous day, said the press office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On January 16, Uladzimir Piarco\u016d, the \u0141uka\u0161enka administration\u2019s propaganda chief, meet with students at the Viciebsk State Technological University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The presidential election is taking place in a purged political landscape amid a new crackdown on regime critics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian opposition dismissed the election as a sham, noting that political reprisals prevent pro-democracy candidates from running and voters from freely expressing their will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, Belarus has not held a free and fair election since 1996.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
