January 17, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Four out of the five presidential bidders have concluded their appearances on the state-controlled TV and radio with the leaders of pro-government parties, Aleh Hajdukievi\u010d and Alaksandar Chi\u017eniak, delivering their second radio addresses to voters today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 longtime ruler Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka who intends to secure another five-year term in power did not use the opportunity, unlike his supporters Hajdukievi\u010d of the Liberal Democratic Party, Chi\u017eniak of the Republican Party of Labor and Justice, Communist Party of Belarus leader Siarhiej Syranko\u016d and former opposition MP Hanna Kanapackaja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each of them was granted two 30-minute slots on radio and TV, respectively. Chi\u017eniak’s four addresses were identical and took about 11 minutes of airtime each. Kanapackaja read out the same points of her election manifesto in Belarusian and Russian on TV and radio. Hajdukievi\u010d and Syranko\u016d each prepared two different versions of addresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus will hold its seventh presidential election from January 21 to 26, with the whole election cycle limited to just three months. The current campaign is taking place in a purged political landscape amid a new crackdown on regime critics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian opposition dismissed the election as a sham, noting that political reprisals prevent pro-democracy candidates from running and voters from freely expressing their will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The country has not held a single free and fair election since 1996 by the standards of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
