January 17, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Most Belarusian respondents do not support the Russian military action in Ukraine, said Ryhor Astapienia, director of the Chatham House’s Belarus Initiative, at an online presentation of the new survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over 800 people were polled online, by phone and through in-depth interviews between December 9 and January 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some 17 percent of respondents said that they supported the Russian military action, 15 percent somewhat support it, 27 percent do not support it and 13 percent somewhat disapprove it. In addition, 29 percent of respondents did not have an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Astapienia pointed out that Russia’s military success has not affected the position of Belarusians. “This suggests that the choice is value-based. People do not join the supposed winner but make an assessment based on their values, saying that they do not back the actions of Russian troops in Ukraine,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, 21 percent of those polled said they would support Belarus’ participation in peace talks on Ukraine and another 21 percent said there were likely not to support it. Meanwhile, 7 percent strongly opposed it, and 36 percent found it difficult to answer the question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Against the backdrop of Belarusians’ anti-war sentiment, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka “has formed a favorable image of a politician who seeks to prevent Belarus from being drawn into the military conflict,” the report said. However, he enjoys majority support only among the pro-government audience (68 percent), while only 4 percent of democratic-minded respondents say he is doing everything to prevent the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Astapenia, the fear factor does not reverse the results but may have reduced the share of pro-Ukrainian answers by some 9 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
