January 17, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The number of Belarusians planning to vote in a presidential election has decreased by 52 percent since 2020, according to Ryhor Astapienia, director of the Chatham House’s Belarus Initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His team polled over 800 people online, by phone and through in-depth interviews between December 9 and January 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the survey, 36 percent of respondents intend to vote next week. In a similar study in 2020, the share was 75 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, 61 percent of pro-government respondents, 27 percent of neutrals, 11 percent of democracy supporters and 27 percent of voters discontent with the state of the economy said they were willing to go to the polls, with most citing “civic duty” as the key motive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some 58 percent of those who would not go to the polls argued that the election was meaningless and its outcome predetermined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
