January 19, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Lithuanian President Gitanas Naus\u0117da has said that the New Belarus Passport project is worth considering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Respublika.lt<\/em> quoted<\/a> him as saying that the similarity between the Lithuanian coat of arms Vytis and the historical Belarusian coat of arms Pahonia depicted on the passport should not be overblown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You know, no one is going to rewrite history. History is what it is,” Naus\u0117da said. “For me and many others, there is no doubt about what the historical capital of Lithuania is, where our political will and political power came from, that it came from Vilnius and spanned the territories of today’s Belarus and Ukraine.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He told journalists that in addition to the symbol, the legal and diplomatic aspects of this project should be discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hundreds of thousands of Belarusians are in exile as a result of the political crisis. Many of them cannot renew their passports because of the risk of contact with Belarusian officials. The Belarusian opposition has decided to print alternative passports to help their compatriots legalize their status. One of the passport centers will open in Vilnius, which worries Lithuanian politicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
