January 21, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Former opposition MP Hanna Kanapackaja pledged to offer Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and his family security guarantees if elected president this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician made the statement yesterday evening during TV debates of presidential hopefuls broadcast by the state-controlled Belarus 1<\/em> TV channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One year ago, \u0141uka\u0161enka already enacted amendments guaranteeing security for former presidents and family members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former president and his family members may not be arrested, investigated and prosecuted for actions committed while he was in office, according to the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kanapackaja had proposed similar immunity back in 2019, but her bill never made it to the hearings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus is holding its seventh presidential election from January 21 to 26, with the whole election cycle limited to just three months. The current campaign is taking place in a purged political landscape amid a new wave of crackdown on regime critics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka, in power since 1994, was the only one of the five presidential candidate not to take part in the debate, which featured his supporters Aleh Hajdukievi\u010d, Alaksandar Chi\u017eniak and Siarhiej Syranko\u016d, as well as Kanapackaja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian opposition dismissed the election as a sham, noting that political reprisals prevent pro-democracy candidates from running and voters from freely expressing their will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus has not held a single free and fair election since 1996 by the standards of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
