January 21, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The New Unity has introduced a bill for consideration at the Latvian Saeima to restrict transactions involving Russians and Belarusians, the Press.lv<\/em> portal reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among other things, the document provides for a ban on the acquisition of real estate in the country for nationals of Belarus and Russia, as well as legal entities owned by them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reported purpose of the bill is to prevent “actions harmful and dangerous to the national interests of Latvia and the circumvention of international sanctions.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The document envisages exceptions for persons with permanent residence permits in Latvia or the status of a European Union resident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ministries of justice and foreign affairs participated in the drafting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the initiators, these restrictions will contribute to internal security since they will not allow “unfriendly” individuals and legal entities to “increase their influence and presence” in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New Unity, the largest faction in the Latvian Saeima, is part of the ruling coalition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, Latvia’s interior ministry proposed amendments to the Law on National Security to prohibit Belarusians and Russians from holding management and executive positions at critical infrastructure facilities. These amendments come as part of increased security measures, which included denying entry to over 1,300 foreign citizens in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Security was heightened in response to Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, supported by Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
