January 22, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has urged participants in the World Economic Forum in Switzerland’s Davos not to underestimate the importance of a free and democratic Belarus for ensuring regional security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cInvest not only in your defense . . .but also in societies that are fighting on the same side as you,\u201d the politician said. \u201cOur society knows better than European societies what it means to have tyrants on your soil, knows how to defend national identity and free media and how to resist propaganda.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities in Minsk keep trading with Europe, militarizing the economy and supplying the Russian army with military goods bought in Europe, she noted, calling for consistency and a focus on \u201cweakening the regime through political isolation, sanctions and closing all possible loopholes.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus should be treated not as a problem but rather as an opportunity to put pressure on the Kremlin, as Belarusian society remains the biggest threat to Russian ruler Vladimir Putin despite reprisals, Cichano\u016dskaja said. Helping Belarusians to regain their country and restore democracy in Belarus would hit Putin harder than any sanctions, she stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician also called for the support of Belarusian independent media and civil society as well as assistance in strengthening opposition democratic structures. Ordinary Belarusians should feel inspired to defend democracy, she noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
