January 22, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> About 35 percent of the Ministry for Emergency Management personnel have already voted in the presidential election, Minister Vadzim Sinia\u016dski told state media journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Unfortunately, three people will not be able to vote because they are on an expedition beyond the Arctic Circle,” he said. \u201cCadets who have come to the polling stations for the first time and our veterans, who cooperate closely with the current officers, are voting.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lawmakers scheduled the seventh presidential election for January 21\u201326.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Central Election Commission (CEC), some 7.8 percent of voters cast their ballots on Tuesday, the first day of early voting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a record voter turnout on the first day for election campaigns in Belarus, according to an analysis of CEC data conducted by Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk tightly controls the election process. The government has outlawed opposition political parties, controls all election commissions and has banned independent observation and opinion polls. It holds more than 1,200 dissidents in prisons for political reasons, and politically-motivated arrests continue since 2020 to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian pro-democracy forces, as well as European parliaments and organizations have already dismissed the race as a sham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
