January 23, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel has reaffirmed Portugal’s support for the fight for freedom and democracy in Belarus at a meeting with \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, the foreign office in Lisbon said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The minister pledged that Portugal will maintain a principled and consistent position on the matter, said the press office of the Belarusian opposition leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja suggested that Rangel support the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s initiative to launch the Moscow Mechanism immediately after the end of the election, which the pro-democracy forces call “non-election,” and join the initiatives to bring those responsible for reprisals in Belarus to justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politicians agreed to organize an international conference on democratic transition, transitional justice and reconciliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja noted that Portugal, with its experience of transition from Ant\u00f3nio Salazar’s dictatorship in the last century, is “an ideal place for such an event,” her press office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian politician also noted that Portugal has become home to hundreds of Belarusians and companies, especially in the IT sector, who have found refuge there after the tumultuous 2020 presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During her visit to Portugal in May 2024, \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja discussed sanctions on the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime with Prime Minister Lu\u00eds Montenegro, emphasizing the need for cooperation while isolating the regime but not ordinary Belarusians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, in January 2024, Belarusian opposition politician Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka said that some EU members, including Portugal, were opposed to new sanctions against the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime because of concerns over Belarusian potash exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
