January 23, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Several key partners of the Belarusian opposition have refused to join Lithuania’s referral to the International Criminal Court regarding the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime’s alleged crimes, National Anti-Crisis Management leader Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prosecution at the ICC is an absolute priority for the pro-democracy movement as the only way to bring the regime to justice in the current international political environment, he told the opposition Coordination Council in Warsaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“At least two crimes were committed in the territory of at least 30 members of the ICC’s Rome Statute. These are crimes against humanity in the form of deportation and politically-motivated persecution,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141atu\u0161ka noted that in the international criminal justice system, deportation means not only physically expelling people, but also creating an environment that forces them to flee, for example for fear of violence or abuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“According to minimal estimates, today we can talk about at least 300,000 Belarusian victims of deportation,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In September, the Lithuanian justice ministry said it submitted evidence of Belarusian officials’ involvement in transnational crimes against humanity to the ICC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are sufficient grounds to believe that security forces have committed crimes against humanity under orders from high-ranking Belarusian political, security and military officials since May 1, 2020, Lithuania noted in its referral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime has forcibly displaced hundreds of thousands of Belarusian citizens to Lithuania and other countries, including those neighboring Belarus, without justification under international law, the ministry alleged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian pro-democracy activists have urged other European governments to support the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
