January 25, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The current presidential election in Belarus is completely undemocratic, European Commission spokeswoman on foreign affairs Anitta Hipper said at a press briefing yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“These elections are a total sham. It is not elections if you already know who is going to win,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hipper stated that the European Union (EU) “is continuing to support the Belarusian people” and “put pressure on the regime.” “We have done so last December with the latest package of sanctions, targeting those responsible for human rights violations,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added that the EU continued to raise awareness about the country’s political prisoners. She called on the Belarusian government to release them and stop reprisals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hipper also recalled the EU’s allocation of \u20ac30 million last December to support civil society in Belarus, pointing out that the total amount of aid increased to \u20ac170 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On January 22, the Belarusian foreign ministry called<\/a> a statement the EU allegedly planned to make after this week\u2019s election \u201cgross interference in the electoral processes of a sovereign state.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe election in Belarus has just begun, but they have already condemned and not recognized everything,\u201d said Anatol H\u0142az, a spokesman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lawmakers scheduled the seventh presidential election for January 21\u201326, with the main voting day on Sunday. Several Western countries and institutions have already said that they are not planning to recognize its results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
