January 27, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka is trying to distance himself from Russia’s war on Ukraine after facilitating the Russian invasion in 2022, the Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement is linked to \u0141uka\u0161enka’s comment yesterday as he claimed that Belarusian peacekeepers could ensure \u201cnormal relations between Ukraine and Russia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyiv described Minsk as a co-aggressor, noting that any references to Belarusian peacekeepers “sound absurd.” \u0141uka\u0161enka uses peacekeeping rhetoric to improve his image internationally, it added.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’m not fighting, I didn’t get involved in the war and I didn’t drag my country [into the war],” the longtime Belarusian ruler told journalists yesterday as the country held the seventh presidential election where he was set to secure another term in office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are helping Russia and when Westerners reproach me for my actions, I tell them: you have 57 countries helping Ukraine, and I’m alone, just one country. . . As for my invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainians know that this is not true,\u201d he said. Troops that attacked Ukraine via Belarus in 2022 \u201cwere not Belarusian troops,\u201d \u0141uka\u0161enka added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February 2022, Russia started a full-scale war against Ukraine. Authorities in Minsk denied the Belarusian army\u2019s involvement in combat operations but allowed Russian troops to attack Ukraine from Belarus on multiple occasions and have persecuted Belarusians for antiwar positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
