January 28, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>New cases of politically-motivated persecution documented in Belarus from January 25 to 27 included authorities\u2019 threats to exiled Belarusians who protested against the contested presidential election on January 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian investigators claimed they identified at least 365 protesters abroad and filed criminal charges against them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, law enforcers warned victims of politically-motivated persecution against communicating with exiled opposition, Mediazona<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other developments, at least 10 people were charged with minor offenses for taking pictures of their ballots at polling stations in Minsk, the state-run media outlets said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities in Minsk released American national Anastassia Nuhfer on the main voting day, the United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ihar \u0160kieta\u016d who runs Podslushano Glubokoye<\/em> Instagram community faces protest-related charges, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. The man has been in custody since last September and will go on trial on February 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, Brest region’s courts heard 370 prosecutors’ requests to brand information products as extremist content, the Prosecutor General’s Office said. Judges blacklisted 123 Telegram channels and chats, 74 Instagram pages, 13 websites, 33 Odnoklassniki accounts, 25 TikTok pages, 57 Facebook accounts, ten print publications and nine YouTube channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities reported the following trials in criminal cases: Alaksandar Barysa\u016d accused of agent activities is on trial in Viciebsk, while the mother of three Julija \u0141aptanovi\u010d jailed in a politically-motivated case went on a new trial in Brest on charges of association with an extremist group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Juryj Za\u0142atuchin from Homiel faces high treason charges, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three days ago, law enforcers arrested a young woman at the Polish-Belarusian border checkpoint, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police searched activist Mika\u0142aj U\u0142asievi\u010d’s home in Varniany, Hrodna region, Haradzienskaja Pravaabarona said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities released Natalla Burako\u016dskaja after she had served three years on protest-related charges, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u010cas\u0142a\u016d Kananovi\u010d, given five years in prison for donations to Belarusian volunteers fighting Russia in Ukraine, was released under a pardon program, a pro-government source said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of January 28, human rights defenders identified at least 1,245 political prisoners, including 36 foreigners, but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
