January 28, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s \u201cstatesmanship\u201d will contribute to the development of ties between Belarus and Serbia, Belarusian state-run media report, citing Serbian President Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107\u2019s congratulatory message to the Belarusian ruler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latter was declared winner in the January 21-26 election that took place in a purged political landscape amid a new wave of crackdown on regime critics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vu\u010di\u0107 reportedly thanked \u0141uka\u0161enka for supporting Serbia’s territorial integrity, most likely referring to Minsk’s refusal to recognize the independence of Kosovo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Serbian media did not report on Vu\u010di\u0107\u2019s message. So far, leaders of 14 countries, including Kazakhstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam, congratulated \u0141uka\u0161enka. Australia, Canada, the European Union, New Zealand, Ukraine and the United Kingdom have already dismissed the recent Belarusian election as a sham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Serbia joined the European Union\u2019s sanctions against Belarus in 2021 and supported further restrictions introduced for \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s support of Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine, but Minsk has been making a diplomatic effort to persuade Belgrade to reverse its decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vu\u010di\u0107 is currently seeking to reassert his power in Serbia amid ongoing anti-government protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
