January 30, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on January 29 as rights defenders reported the upcoming trials of Andrej Cima\u0161enka, Bahdan Li\u0107vina\u016d and Maksim Bitko\u016d in Homiel and Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three men are accused of violating electoral legislation, the Viasna Human Rights Center said. They most likely took pictures of the ballots at the recent presidential election or took their ballots out of the polling stations. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seven teenagers were arrested in Homiel about six months ago on suspicion of being members of a blacklisted organization, Radyjo Svaboda<\/em> reported. Authorities filed extremism-related charges against them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michai\u0142 Laba\u0144, serving a four-year prison term on defamation charges widely seen as politically motivated, went on trial yesterday in Viciebsk, Viasna said. Authorities accuse him of financing extremism in connection with donations to opposition initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 307 people have been convicted of resisting police or threatening violence to police since 2020, Viasna said in a report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of January 30, human rights defenders identified at least 1,245 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
